COVID 19

THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC

There are various kinds of coronaviruses, a few of which cause diseases. SARS-Cov-2 is a new kind of coronavirus that resulted in the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) disease which caused a global pandemic in 2020.

Covid-19, according to reports, first appeared in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 where it was noticed that the virus may have originated from a seafood market in Wuhan.  Researchers are still identifying the exact place of origin for the disease.

The virus, based on research, spreads through droplets in the air when an infected person either sneezes or coughs. These droplets do not go after a few feet and fall to the ground. It is difficult to diagnose the disease as the symptoms are similar to a cold or flu and the best way to know if one has covid-19 is to get a laboratory test done.

What is convalescent plasma? Does it help people with Covid-19?

When people recover from Covid-19, their blood contains antibodies that their bodies produced to fight the coronavirus and help them get well. Antibodies are found in plasma, a component of blood. Convalescent plasma- plasma that is recovered from patients – has been used for more than 100 years to treat a variety of illnesses from measles to polio, chickenpox, and SARS. It is widely believed to be safe.

Who can donate plasma for Covid-19?

In order to donate plasma, a person must meet several criteria. They have to have tested positive for Covid-19, recovered, have no symptoms for 14 days, currently test negative for Covid-19, and have high enough antibody levels in their plasma. A donor and patient must also have compatible blood types. Once plasma is donated, it is screened for other infectious diseases such as HIV. Each donor produces enough plasma to treat one to three patients. Donating plasma should not weaken the donor’s immune system, nor make the donor more susceptible to getting re-infected with the virus.

FACTS & MYTHS

Unfortunately, there are lot of misinformation spreading about the vaccines. So before we go to get vaccine, its important for everyone to know the actual facts and separate them from myths. These are some of the myths and the fact about vaccine :

Myth -Male will infertile

Fact – there is no scientific proof that vaccine causes infertility.

Myth- vaccine hasn’t finished clinical trials

Fact – both covishield and covaxin have finished clinical trials.

Myth- the covid-19 vaccine has severe effects such as allergic reactions.

Fact – some participants get side effects like muscle pain, chills ,headache and in extremely rare case people can have severe allergy , who have a history of severe allergic reactions like anasphylaxis because of the ingredients used in vaccine.

Myth- you can get covid-19 from the vaccine.

Fact- you cannot get covid-19 from vaccine because it doesn’t contain live virus.

Myth – you can’t get vaccinated during your period

Fact – period and vaccine can go hand in hand. So, far no scientific link between the two.

Myth – why should you get vaccinated if you can still get covid-19?

Fact – through vaccination, we teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight with the virus. Even if you get infected, it will keep you from getting seriously ill.

Myth – if someone is already been dignosed with covid-19, they don’t need to get vaccinated.

Fact- if someone is diagnosed with covid, they also still can get benefit from vaccine. It will protect you from getting infected easily by covid or getting serious.
